It’s an atmosphere you create, one in which people sit on their seats and realise that they are not safe, not relaxed, not removed from the drama. Even if I never did, there was a chance the actor could have jumped into the audience. People could feel that danger, that intensity. Maybe Thomas (Ostermeier– the director of the Schaubühne) wouldn’t say this now, but when we started about 20 years ago he said: “We want to jump with our naked arses into people’s faces.” I was the only one who took this quite literally! (Laughs) But I like it. That communion with the audience is very present in your stage performances, especially when you break the barriers between those on stage and those watching, with some radical improv at times. Not to be able to express myself is tough, especially not having those moments to express myself so intensely in front of people.

My first movie was in 2006, and I was always hoping to get chances. When I started at the Schaubühne I wasn’t allowed to do too much. Some people say that they now understand how privileged they are – I was always very aware of what I had. When I was not allowed to be on stage, not to DJ… I felt like I was losing everything that I love so much. I do a lot of things in parallel – I work as an actor, a director, a photographer, as a DJ… It was always a dream for me to be so active, and it’s now a reality. People tell me that I work too much and that I should do less. The sudden rupture must have been quite a shock… You were very busy at the Berlinale this year with two lms – Vadim Perelman’s Persian Lessons and Stéphanie Chuat and Véronique Reymond’s competition title My Little Sister.

We played it six times and then suddenly it stopped. Of course, the focus is always the opening and you invest so much work and passion into it. It’s the first time I’m talking about Corona, because I don’t feel I have any more to say than any other person. Why should it be any more interesting to hear what an actor has to say about this? But I suppose for me, there was this suddenness to it – I had the opening of Ibsen’s Peer Gynt (John Bock’s one-man piece at the Schaubühne ), and I was working a lot. We caught up with the German actor about lockdown, the role of the artist in times of crisis and whether this year’s upheavals will spark meaningful change. Most recently, the series was awarded the International TV Award 2018 at the Premios Ondas in Spain and honored with several Bambi Awards in Germany.īabylon Berlin premiered Sept 30th on public broadcaster ARD as the most watched series of the year on German television with 7.8 million viewers. It swept up five German Television Awards earlier this year, among them Best Drama Series, won big at the Grimme Awards, and took home the Austrian Television Award Romy, the Magnolia Award at the Shanghai TV Festival, and the Grand Prize at the Seoul International Drama Awards.

The series has been sold to 100 countries by Beta Film. The production scored record ratings in Germany and abroad and received a lot of international attention. Fritz Bauer, SS-GB), Meret Becker (Munich, Comedian Harmonists), Martin Wuttke ( Inglourious Basterds, Cloud Atlas), Trystan Pütter ( Toni Erdmann, Generation War), and Saskia Rosendahl ( Never Look Away). Some of the new additions to the series will be Ronald Zehrfeld ( The People vs. Many other cast members from the first two seasons will return as well, amongst them Lars Eidinger ( SS-GB, Sense8), Leonie Benesch ( The Crown), Karl Markovics ( The Counterfeiters, Grand Budapest Hotel, The King's Choice) and Jördis Triebel (Dark). Fresh off the sequel to David Fincher’s The Girls with the Dragon Tattoo, Volker Bruch (Generation War) will reprise his role of Gereon Rath while Liv Lisa Fries ( The Wave) returns as Charlotte Ritter.
